Mogao Caves, Dunhuang

The Mogao Caves, also known as the Thousand Buddha Grottoes, are one of the most important cultural treasures of China. With more than 700 caves carved into the cliff face over 1,600 years ago, the site contains tens of thousands of Buddhist murals and over 2,000 sculptures. It served as a major spiritual centre on the Silk Road.
Mingsha Mountain, also called the Singing Sand Dunes, rises sharply from the Gobi Desert and produces a humming sound when the wind moves across its slopes. It is a unique natural phenomenon known to travellers for centuries. Nestled at its base is Crescent Lake, an oasis shaped like a crescent that has survived for thousands of years despite the shifting sands. The contrast of cool water and towering dunes is one of Dunhuang’s most iconic sights. Travelers also get to take photography in traditional fairy or ancient costumes.

Jiayuguan Pass

Built in 1372 during the early Ming Dynasty, this fortress marked the western edge of the Great Wall and acted as a strategic point guarding the Silk Road. It is one of the best-preserved military fortifications along the ancient defence line.
Far from the fortified walls and ancient caves, the Jinta Populus Euphratica Forest is a stunning autumn destination famous for its ancient Populus euphratica trees growing along desert waterways and mirror-like Jinbo Lake. It’s best visited mid-September to mid-October for peak golden foliage and reflections, and popular stop for seasonal photography and nature walks.
